Ho-Ho-How you can help the NHS this Christmas

1 December 2013

‘Tis the season to be jolly but try not to put extra strain on medical services this Christmas.

The advice comes from GP Dr Bob Bowes, who chairs NHS West Kent Commissioning Group (CCG), which plans and pays for the area’s health services.

Dr Bowes said: “The weekend just before Christmas, and in between Christmas and New Year, are traditionally very busy times for the NHS, which see many patients using out-of-hours GP services and going to A&E.

“We ask patients who do not need urgent treatment to leave these services free for those who really need them.

“Please be aware that GP practices in west Kent will be working as usual from 8am to 6.30pm on 22, 23 and 24 December, and open again the following week, except for New Year’s Day. They will always try to fit you in, if you need to be seen the same day.

“Patients can also help by checking if you have an important repeat prescription which will run out over the festive season and re-ordering it now, if you still need the medication.

“If you need urgent treatment for a minor injury such as a cut, strain or burn, you can visit a minor injury unit which, along with pharmacies, are open throughout the Christmas period. Patients can check opening times, or seek advice for common symptoms by using our Health Help Now app – available from the App Store and Google Play, or at www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net

“Anyone who needs medical advice fast when it is not a 999 emergency should call NHS 111 when their practice is closed.

“Patients can also help by treating minor illnesses and basic injuries at home, and by making sure they are prepared for health problems over Christmas.

“While you are getting ready for Christmas, make sure you have a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home which should include paracetamol, cold remedies, antiseptic wipes, plasters, tweezers and a thermometer.”

The Dementia Helpline is open throughout the festive period, 24 hour a day, on 0800 500 3014. Hopeline (08000 684141) is open from 2pm to 5pm on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Kent Mental Health Matters (08001 070160) is open all hours and the Samaritans are also open throughout the period on 08457 909090. DentaLine (01634 890300) is open 8:30am to 1:25pm on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

If you need urgent medical help but it is not a life-threatening 999 emergency, call the free NHS 111 phone service.
