We are pleased to be able to update you on progress in developing the new combined hospital and GP surgery for Edenbridge.

While it may feel like progress is slow, we are at a stage of development where a lot is happening behind the scenes and work has been moving forward on several fronts simultaneously. We will soon be making some important decisions that we will be able to share with you, so do look out for further updates.

Since the Edenbridge project programme board was established late last year to oversee the work, we have made headway in the following areas.

Planning and location

Two potential sites for the development have been shortlisted. Before making a final decision, we are assessing the sites to check they comply with the design principles previously outlined:

  • Flexibility – ensuring the site can support the future needs of the community and can adapt as new services or legislation require
  • Value for money
  • Innovation – using technology and new, forward-looking ways of working to meet the population’s current and future needs
  • Integration – enabling the creation of shared spaces and working practices
  • Sustainability – creating the most environmentally sensitive facility possible.

We are working closely with Sevenoaks District Council and the town council who are very supportive of the project. You may also have seen that the district council has recently published the first draft of its Local Plan, which includes the development of the combined hospital and GP surgery at Edenbridge.

Financing the project

It is possible to bid for national money through our local Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP). We are pleased to say the Edenbridge project has been shortlisted by the Kent and Medway STP as a priority for central government funding, and a bid has been submitted by the STP on our behalf on 29 June 2018. While very encouraging, there will be bids from across the country for the national money so the programme board is continuing to explore other sources of funding.

Developing the clinical model

The clinical model for the services to be delivered from the new combined hospital and GP surgery is being developed. There will also be an opportunity to contribute your ideas, so look out for further information in the next few months about how to get involved.

The model fits with the wider local care plan, which describes how we want to provide better access to joined-up care and support in people’s own communities across west Kent.

As the NHS works hard to develop local care in west Kent, we are involving people and gathering their views through surveys and public events – please look out for details and do participate if you can.

More updates about the Edenbridge project’s progress will follow. Please visit our website for background information about the project.
